ESOL

Miami Jackson Adult Education Center (MJAEC) offers a top-of-the-line Adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program with classes designed to fit various levels of proficiency. MJAEC’s multicultural staff of experienced language professionals focuses on second language acquisition needs through a comprehensive standards-based curriculum. Courses will help speakers of any level grow in their ability to be successful workers, citizens, and prospering members of the community through greater mastery of the English language.

Three (3) trimesters per year. They are as follows:

  • 1st Trimester (Term 1: August – December)
  • 2nd Trimester (Term 2: January – April)
  • 3rd Trimester (Term 3: April – August)

Classes are available, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., to fit learning into your busy lifestyles. Check class schedules for specific times.

All courses focus on the following competencies:

  • Family and Community Resources
  • Employment
  • Consumer Education
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Transportation and Travel
  • Safety and Security

Placement into the ESOL classes is determined by the results of the CASAS test, a state-approved assessment instrument taken before entering the program. CASAS evaluates language proficiency with questions on listening and reading comprehension. This assessment process identifies where the student will begin in the six levels of ESOL:

  • Foundation
  • Low Beginning
  • High Beginning
  • Low Intermediate
  • High Intermediate

Advanced Students will finish the ESOL program when they test successfully out of the Advanced level. There is further English training beyond the ESOL program in classes focus on:

  • Academic Skills
  • Pre GED and GED
